Michael Levi

Physicist

Michael Levi is a senior scientist in Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division and the Director of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). DESI is the world’s most powerful multi-fiber spectrometer and measures the impact of Dark Energy over an 11-billion year span of cosmic history. As director, Levi oversaw the instrument’s construction and has built an international collaboration of more than 1000 scientists to work on the project. Levi was elected fellow of the American Physical Society in 2000, and in 2023 was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which recognized his “distinguished contributions to experimental particle physics and for directing the design and construction of a major new instrument for obtaining millions of high-resolution spectra of distant galaxies.”
