Jonathan Cole
A neurologist, scientist, and author in the UK, Jonathan Cole’s writing explores the experience of impairment of the body from the first person perspective. Pride and a Daily Marathon detailed living without movement sense or touch. It became a BBC TV documentary and was one vignette in Peter Brook’s play, The Man Who. In Still Lives, he asked quadriplegics how they live without movement below the neck while in About Face he explored the relationship between face and self as revealed by the narratives of those who are blind, autistic, or with visible difference. His latest book, The Invisible Smile, details the experiences of those with congenital absence of facial expression. He is also an editor on Kapur et al’s forthcoming Paradoxical Brain and collaborates with philosophers interested in the body. His love of New York City began in the 70’s when, as a student, he studied with Oliver Sacks.
