Erik Verlinde

Theoretical Physicist

Erik Verlinde is a professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Amsterdam who is renowned for his work in string theory, gravity, black holes, and cosmology. Among his notable contributions is the Verlinde formula, introduced during his doctoral research, which is significant in conformal field theory and topological field theory. In 2010, he proposed the concept of entropic gravity, suggesting that gravity is an emergent phenomenon resulting from differences in information concentration in space, challenging traditional views of gravity as a fundamental force. For his groundbreaking work, Verlinde was awarded the Spinoza Prize in 2011, the highest scientific honor in the Netherlands.
