Dennis Charney
Dennis Charney is one of the world’s leading experts in the neurobiology and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders. After decades of work on the biology of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, Charney has turned his attention toward investigating the psychobiological mechanisms of human resilience to stress. His work on understanding the neural circuits and neurochemistry involved in human anxiety, fear, and depression has led to new treatments for mood and anxiety disorders. Now he and his colleagues have found specific hormones and peptides that contribute to resilience at the molecular level, and they have identified a prescription for enhancing human resilience.
A former Yale professor and researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health, Charney has been a dean of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine since 2004. His scientific research has been honored by every major award in his field. Charney has authored more than 700 publications, including groundbreaking scientific papers, chapters, and books such as The Peace of Mind Prescription: An Authoritative Guide to Finding the Most Effective Treatment for Anxiety and Depression, The Physicians Guide to Depression and Bipolar Disorders, and Resilience: The Science of Mastering Life’s Greatest Challenges, co-authored with Steven Southwick.
