Bertram F. Malle

Cognitive Scientist

Bertram F. Malle is professor of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences at Brown University. He studied psychology, philosophy, and linguistics in Graz, Austria, before coming to the United States in 1990 for graduate studies. In 1995 he received his Ph.D. in psychology at Stanford University and joined the University of Oregon Psychology Department, also leading the Institute of Cognitive and Decision Sciences there, from 2001–2007. Malle received the Society of Experimental Social Psychology Outstanding Dissertation award in 1995, a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award in 1997, and he is past president of the Society of Philosophy and Psychology. Malle’s research, which has been funded by the NSF, Army, Templeton Foundation, Office of Naval Research, and DARPA, focuses on social cognition, moral judgment, and human-robot interaction. He has published over 100 articles and several books.
