Alex Filippenko

Astrophysicist

Alex Filippenko is a Richard & Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor in the Physical Sciences at University of California, Berkeley. There, he has made significant contributions to the study of supernovae, active galaxies, black holes, and the accelerating expansion of the universe. He was the only person to have been a member of both teams that revealed the accelerating expansion of the Universe, a discovery that was honored with the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics to the teams’ leaders. His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Gruber Cosmology Prize and the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.

Alex has not only distinguished himself as a scientist, but also as a professor. He has been voted the “Best Professor” at UC Berkeley a record nine times and was named the 2006 Carnegie/CASE National Professor of the Year among doctoral institutions.

He is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
